Best Kids' Activities in the South Bay: A 2026 Guide

The South Bay is one of the best places in Southern California to raise kids. Great weather, beach access, strong schools, and a real community vibe -- it all adds up to an area where keeping kids active and engaged is genuinely fun. But with so many options, parents new to the area (or just looking for something new) often ask the same question: what's actually worth trying?
We put together this guide for Torrance, Redondo Beach, Hermosa Beach, Manhattan Beach, El Segundo, and surrounding South Bay families. We're obviously biased toward gymnastics (it's what we do), but we've included a range of options because we genuinely believe active, engaged kids are the best outcome -- whether that's with us or somewhere else.
1. Gymnastics & Ninja Classes (Aerial Gymnastics Club -- Torrance & Redondo Beach)
We'll start with what we know best. AGC offers gymnastics, dance, ninja obstacle courses, tumbling, camps, and birthday parties for kids ages 18 months to 16 years at two South Bay locations.
What makes gymnastics a particularly great activity for young kids: it's one of the few sports that simultaneously develops strength, flexibility, balance, coordination, and mental resilience. Kids who do gymnastics early tend to pick up other sports faster -- it's that foundational.
Our ninja classes are a huge hit with kids who want something high-energy and different. Think American Ninja Warrior, but designed specifically for kids from ages 5 to 14.
Location: 23036 Hawthorne Blvd, Torrance | 2701 Manhattan Beach Blvd, Redondo Beach

2. The Beach (Obviously -- But Here's How to Make It an Activity)
Living in the South Bay means having some of California's best beaches within a short drive. For young kids, an afternoon at the beach is genuinely great physical activity -- running in sand, swimming in the ocean, building sandcastles, and splashing in waves all build strength and coordination in a way that feels like pure fun.
Best spots for families with young kids: Redondo Beach pier area (calmer water, lots of amenities), Hermosa Beach (wide sand, very family-friendly), Manhattan Beach (beautiful and walkable, though gets crowded on weekends).
Pro tip: the South Bay beach bike path runs from Torrance Beach all the way to Santa Monica. Renting bikes or bikes with trailers and riding the path is a fantastic half-day activity for older kids.
3. Torrance Nature Center at South Coast Botanic Garden
The South Coast Botanic Garden in Palos Verdes is an underrated gem for South Bay families. 87 acres of gardens, walking paths, a children's garden, and a full program of family events throughout the year. It's the kind of place that's genuinely beautiful and genuinely interesting for kids who like being outside.
Worth noting: they host a summer Concerts on the Green series and seasonal events that are popular with local families.
4. Youth Sports Leagues (AYSO, Little League, YMCA)
The South Bay has strong youth sports infrastructure. AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization) has chapters throughout Torrance, Redondo Beach, and surrounding communities. Little League baseball is active throughout the area. And the South Bay YMCA offers a wide range of youth sports and fitness programs.
For many families, a team sport is the primary activity through elementary and middle school years. One note from a gymnastics gym: kids who do one season of gymnastics before committing to a single team sport often perform noticeably better. The body control carries.
5. Discovery Cube Los Angeles (Formerly the California Science Center)
Technically in the broader LA area but worth the drive for South Bay families: the California Science Center and Discovery Cube offer world-class science education for kids. Discovery Cube in particular is hands-on, interactive, and genuinely engaging for ages 3 through early teens.
6. Cabrillo Marine Aquarium (San Pedro)
Just a few miles from Torrance, the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro is an outstanding and affordable activity for kids who love marine life. Small enough to do in a few hours, educational, and with a genuine beach and tidepool area where kids can explore. Admission is low-cost and parking is reasonable.
7. Gymnastics Birthday Parties (AGC -- Yes, We're Mentioning Ourselves Again)
We could not write a South Bay kids' activity guide without mentioning that AGC hosts some of the best birthday parties in the area. Open gym time, ninja obstacle courses, a private party room, and a dedicated party host -- for the kids, it's the most fun they've had. For the parents, it's one of the easiest parties they've ever thrown.
Weekend dates fill quickly. If you're planning a party more than 6 weeks out, contact us now.

Keeping Kids Active in the South Bay
How to Choose the Right Activity Ask: Does my child feel confident here? Do they look forward to going? Is this sustainable for our schedule?
The best activity for your child is the one they actually want to do. Our advice: try a few things, see what sparks genuine enthusiasm, and invest in that. Kids who find an activity they love -- whether it's gymnastics, soccer, dance, martial arts, or something else -- develop lifelong habits around physical activity that pay off for decades.
At Aerial Gymnastics Club we see kids go from hesitant to confident in weeks because our technique-first coaching and small classes are designed for progression. Two South Bay locations. Classes for ages 18 months and up.
If you'd like to try AGC, all enrollments are backed by our 30-day money-back guarantee.
