Surviving Gymnastics Practice: How Our Parents Turn Wait Time Into Me Time

You know the drill.

Your child has gymnastics at 4:30.

You arrive at 4:23 because being seven minutes early somehow required leaving the house 40 minutes ago.

Class ends at 5:30.

Going home makes no sense. By the time you fight traffic, pull into the driveway and dramatically exhale, you'll need to leave again.

So you sit in a tiny chair (or stand) and stare at your phone for the next 60 minutes that feels like three business days.

The Five Stages of Waiting for Kids' Sports Practice

Stage 1: Optimism.

"I'll get so much done while they're in class."

You brought your laptop. Your headphones. Maybe even a book. This is going to be great.

Stage 2: The Parking Lot Calculation.

Could you run an errand? Technically, yes.

Realistically, you'll spend 14 minutes driving somewhere, six minutes looking for parking and the entire errand checking the clock. Abort mission.

Stage 3: The Car Office.

You answer emails from the driver's seat while balancing your laptop against the steering wheel. Your mobile hotspot disconnects.

Your back begins filing a formal complaint.

Stage 4: Snack Regret.

The granola bar intended for your child after practice is suddenly looking like dinner.

Stage 5: Acceptance.

You live here now.

Youth sports parents know the routine. Practices don't exist in isolation—they have to fit around work, dinner, siblings, homework, traffic and the logistics of getting everyone where they need to be.

What If Waiting Didn't Have to Be Terrible?

That's part of the thinking behind Aerial Gymnastics Club - Redondo Beach.

While your child is flipping, climbing and learning new skills, you don't necessarily have to spend the hour staring at your phone.

AGC Redondo's 28,000-square-foot gymnastics and dance facility includes something increasingly important to busy families: A place for the parents, too.

Need to finish that presentation or help another child do homework? Plug into one of the parent workstations with free wifi.

Had "go to the gym" sitting untouched on your to-do list since January? There are cardio machines.

Want to chat with other parents or maybe do absolutely nothing? Excellent. There are lounge and seating areas for that, too.

And because no parent needs another small inconvenience added to an already complicated afternoon, there's free on-site public parking. The best part? Your kid is just a few feet away, so you can keep cheering and encouraging them every step of the way!

Your Kid Gets Gymnastics. You Get an Hour Back.

We can't eliminate carpools. We can't make your children remember where they left their water bottle. And we definitely can't explain why getting one child to one activity requires the logistical planning of a small military operation.

But we can make the waiting part better.

So while your kid gets stronger, braver and more confident at gymnastics, maybe you answer some emails. Maybe you get in a workout. Or maybe you sit quietly for an hour while nobody asks you for a snack.

Honestly, that might be the best amenity of all.
